Project Overview: Seawater Filtration for a High-Value Aquaculture Farm

In marine aquaculture, filtration equipment is not simply a supporting utility—it is a critical part of the production system. This African marine aquaculture project required a commercial sand filter solution capable of operating continuously in highly corrosive seawater conditions, under intense year-round sunlight, without compromising water quality or system reliability.

The client operates a large-scale marine fish farm focused on breeding high-value species, including wolffish and tuna. Their recirculating and seawater treatment systems run at high frequency, making stable water circulation essential for protecting fish fry and maintaining daily farm operations.

For more than 20 years, Guangdong Poolking has designed and manufactured commercial filtration equipment, including fiberglass sand filters, plastic sand filters, cartridge filters, DE filters, pumps, LED pool lights, valves, and fittings. With two production bases in Guangzhou and Taishan City covering approximately 60,000 square meters, our engineering team supports projects that require both standardized products and non-standard customization.

For this project, the goal was clear: provide a cost-effective alternative to premium imported equipment while meeting the demanding performance expectations of a marine aquaculture environment.

Advantages of PoolKing Sand Filter

The Challenge: High Salinity, Strong UV, and No Room for Failure

From an engineering perspective, seawater filtration is far more demanding than conventional swimming pool filtration. A standard pool sand filter may perform well in freshwater applications, but it can fail prematurely when exposed to the combined pressure of high salinity, prolonged UV radiation, frequent backwashing, and continuous-duty circulation.

The client had historically selected high-end European and American filtration brands. Those products had earned the client's trust because the farm could not afford unexpected downtime. A tank failure, leaking fitting, corroded fastener, or unstable valve could interrupt water circulation and create serious risks for high-value fish fry.

However, as the aquaculture operation expanded, imported filtration equipment became a major capital expense. The client needed more filtration capacity, but the cost of continuing to purchase premium overseas brands limited the speed and scale of expansion.

Their concern was not simply whether Poolking could offer a lower price. The real question was whether a new supplier could deliver the same level of engineering reliability in harsh marine conditions.

The client raised three core concerns:

1. Could the fiberglass filter tank resist aging, fading, and embrittlement under the scorching African sun?

2. Could every wetted component withstand long-term exposure to high-concentration seawater without corrosion-related failure?

3. Could the complete filtration system maintain stable operation during repeated backwashing and 24/7 high-load circulation?

For this client, a lower-cost filter was only valuable if it could protect the farm's production continuity. The potential loss associated with fish fry mortality could be many times greater than the initial cost of the filtration equipment itself.

Technical Requirements for the Customized Sand Filter

To address the project conditions, the client established strict technical requirements for the marine aquaculture sand filter system.

UV-Resistant Fiberglass Filter Tank

The filter vessel needed strong UV resistance to prevent premature material aging. In areas with intensive sun exposure, inferior resin systems and low-quality fiberglass can gradually degrade, becoming brittle or losing structural strength over time.

The tank therefore needed to combine high-strength fiberglass reinforcement with a resin system suitable for outdoor operation. Low light transmittance and a protective anti-UV surface layer were essential to support long-term use in an exposed aquaculture environment.

Full SS316 Anti-Corrosion Protection

Seawater corrosion does not affect only the main filter body. Small hardware components, fasteners, screws, connection points, and internal metal parts can all become weak points if the wrong materials are selected.

The client required all critical wetted components and detailed metal parts to meet SS316 stainless steel standards. This requirement applied to components both inside and outside the tank where seawater, moisture, salt spray, or repeated cleaning could create corrosion risks.

Pressure Tolerance for Continuous Circulation

The farm's seawater filtration system operates continuously and experiences repeated pressure changes during normal filtration and backwashing cycles. The filter tank, valve assemblies, and connections needed sufficient fatigue resistance and pressure tolerance to support high-frequency operation.

The client also paid particular attention to valves. In practical engineering applications, valves are frequently operated components, and weak handles or thin-walled structures may loosen over time. A reliable valve configuration was therefore essential for maintaining stable backwashing performance.

Poolking's Customized Anti-Corrosion Solution

After reviewing the operating environment and the client's technical priorities, our team developed a customized commercial sand filter solution focused on material reliability, corrosion resistance, and long-term mechanical stability.

High-Grade Resin and Fiberglass Construction

For the filter tank, we selected high-grade resin and fiberglass materials designed to improve structural strength and outdoor durability. The fiberglass reinforcement featured clearly defined fibers and low light transmittance, helping reduce the impact of direct sunlight on the tank structure.

We also applied an anti-UV protective coating to strengthen resistance to prolonged African sun exposure. This material upgrade was important because UV resistance is not just an appearance issue. It directly affects the long-term integrity and service life of a fiberglass sand filter used outdoors.

The resulting tank structure was designed to remain stable in a demanding environment where sunlight, heat, salt air, and continuous water circulation all act on the equipment at the same time.

SS316 Details for Marine Corrosion Resistance

To meet the client's anti-corrosion requirements, Poolking upgraded all relevant fasteners, screws, connection details, and critical metal components to SS316 stainless steel.

This approach addressed a common but often overlooked challenge in marine filtration projects: a filter system is only as reliable as its smallest vulnerable component. Even when the main tank is corrosion resistant, ordinary metal screws, bolts, or fittings can rust and create maintenance problems, leakage risks, or eventual operational failure.

By specifying SS316 material across key details, we reduced potential corrosion points throughout the system. This provided the client with a more complete marine-grade filtration solution rather than a standard filter tank with only partial corrosion protection.

Heavy-Duty Butterfly Valve Configuration

For high-frequency backwashing, we selected premium thick-walled butterfly valves instead of the lightweight accessories commonly found in lower-grade filtration equipment.

The valve handles were designed with stronger support to improve stability during repeated operation. This was especially important for the aquaculture facility, where operators would need to perform routine backwashing as part of ongoing water-quality management.

The heavy-duty valve configuration helped the client avoid a common maintenance concern: loosened or weakened valve handles caused by repeated use. In a continuous seawater filtration system, durable operating components contribute directly to more dependable daily management.

Results: Stable Water Circulation and Cost-Effective Expansion

Once installed and commissioned, the customized anti-corrosion sand filters delivered stable water circulation performance under the farm's high-salinity operating conditions.

The equipment successfully withstood the combined challenges of seawater exposure and intense sunlight. The client was able to expand its aquaculture lines with a lower equipment investment than continuing exclusively with premium imported brands.

Most importantly, the project created confidence in Poolking's engineering capability. Within three months after the initial equipment entered operation, the customer replaced approximately 50% of the old filtration equipment across the facility with Poolking products.

This result was not driven by price alone. It reflected the customer's practical experience with equipment reliability, material quality, operating stability, and the overall suitability of the customized solution for a harsh marine environment.

What This Marine Aquaculture Case Demonstrates

This project illustrates why non-standard customization matters in commercial and industrial filtration. A marine aquaculture system cannot rely on a one-size-fits-all sand filter. The filter body, resin, fiberglass structure, metal components, valves, and fittings must all be considered as part of one operating system.

For Poolking, this case demonstrates two core capabilities:

- Non-standard customization: We can adapt commercial sand filter configurations to specific project requirements, including UV resistance, marine corrosion protection, material upgrades, and heavy-duty valve selection.

- Engineering-grade quality control: We focus on the details that influence long-term reliability, particularly in high-salinity, high-frequency, and outdoor operating environments.

As a source manufacturer established in 2005, Poolking combines more than two decades of filtration manufacturing experience with in-house production resources. Our objective is to help engineering contractors, aquaculture operators, distributors, and commercial project owners access dependable filtration equipment that supports demanding applications without unnecessary cost barriers.
